Book Review

Story Structure: The Key to Successful Fiction (The Red Sneaker Writers Book Series #1) by William Bernhardt

In this book, New York Times-bestselling author William Bernhardt explains the elements that make stories work, using examples spanning from Gilgamesh to The Hunger Games. In each chapter, he introduces essential concepts in a direct and easily comprehended manner. Most importantly, Bernhardt demonstrates how you can apply these ideas to improve your own writing.

I liked this book for what I wanted. I will though get another book that will go more in depth later.

If you want a book that goes into detail about story structure, this book is not for you. The one thing about it, he warns you what type of book this is up front. I recommend this book if you want an introduction or a refresher on story structure.

This book was highly informative given its directness. It tells you the different points in each act and the acts themselves. I enjoyed how he had a small diagram showing each example as we went along. I am a visual person and it helped me understand where in the story he was talking about. It was a great refresher, and I learned things.

This book was an easy read and to a faster reader, a day read. This was a book great for someone who is getting started and wanted to know key points on structure. This book is the first one in a series and I will get the rest.

I give this book a 3/5

Rating: 3 out of 5.

    1. This is the only book I have read so far on Story Structure. K.M. Weiland has been mentioned in a few online workshops I have done. Her books are popular and I have one on my tbr pile: 5 Secrets of Story Structure: How to Write a Novel That Stands Out and Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story. How I have been studying story structure is what I learned from a workshop. It has been helpful in many ways. It takes a while to understand this part of writing as it is not always taught well. Here is the blog post based on the workshop. http://jenniferblanchard.net/master-story-structure-3-steps/.
