Bound by Red: A paranormal romance retelling of Red Riding Hood (The Midnight Retellings Collection Book 1) by P. Stormcrow

Scarlet Davis, ex-submissive, was content with her life between working as a programmer and dating a gorgeous six-foot-two golden-haired lumberjack she met on a Tinder date gone right. That is until she ran her car into a dog by accident. A dog which overnight turned into a naked man named Lucas who then proceeds to inform her that he is a wolf, not a dog. Now she is spending every waking moment trying to forget such a thing is even possible.

I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed how the red riding hood story was sprinkled throughout the novel. The red hood from the event and the red hoodie. Granny showed up along with the “big bad wolf”. The main character’s name, Scarlet, alone was a nod with the nickname “Red”. These characters were well rounded and memorable. I know little about this genre or the subject of submissive, some things
I have an issue which could be a genre or subject thing.

There are a few things I wished were different. The story is too short, 9 Chapters plus an epilogue. And I still wanted more. I don’t mind short chapters, but I loved this story and wanted more, which is great right. For myself, I felt as if the story in the first 2 chapters were fast, and the tempo and story didn’t match until the third chapter. It is as if the writer wanted to hurry and get to the main storyline.

I felt the relationship between Scarlet and Derrick wasn’t realistic because of how the story opened. I wouldn’t have been bothered if maybe it was a mention how they met, not necessarily a flashback but a jump in on the relationship instead of just met then they act like they have been together for months. But I don’t know if it is the subject of submissiveness as again, I am not familiar with that world. Maybe another chapter or a few more dates before bringing in the sideways relationship. I loved how the relationship between Scarlet and Lucas developed and wished we got a little more of Lucas, maybe an extra chapter about a few days or weeks after the end incident before the epilogue. I think it’s mainly because I want more lol.

I recommend this book if you want a short, well-written story. I read it in one sitting, and I am not a fast reader. The balance between paranormal and romance is written well. I like twists on fairytales and this one I will read again.
