EMT Abbie Grimshaw must prove she can be a good guardian for two young orphans, but a shape-shifter friend needs her to find out what got his sister killed.
The investigation drives Abbie straight into the cutthroat world of magically modified food.
If she doesn’t get it in gear and solve the mystery quickly, she could lose her friend, her kids, and her life.
I loved reading the first one and jumped at the chance to read this one. This one did not disappoint. This one was just as enjoyable as the first. The tempo was right on, and the length of the book was not a bother. This held my interest from beginning to end, and I am looking forward to more!
In this story, Abbie is trying to prove she is a good guardian to Nica and Jimi to gain over custody. The chief advises her to stay out of trouble, but it is hard to do when another Grimm related problem requires her attention. I am happy to see how Abbie is more fleshed out in this one. She feels more well-rounded, and I connected with her in this one more than the first book. I cannot wait to read more about her and her journey as a Grimm.
The rest of the characters felt just as well written as they were in the first book. Jimi has gotten closer to Abbie, but Nica has taken an awkward turn that has gotten Abbie concerned. We learn a little more about our Standard Bearers and how they grow as a team. I cannot wait to see where their journey goes.
The way the author intertwines paranormal and mystery sleuth genre is well done. I enjoy how well balanced the two are in this story. They feel well connected and natural. What I also enjoy is the theme of family. In these two books, family is more than just blood relation. Family is what you make and who you make it with.
I cannot wait to get into book 3. This is a series I will continue to follow. It is fun and well written, and I cannot wait to read more adventures from the Standard Bearers.
I recommend this to anyone who likes to read series, paranormal, mystery, and Grimms.
*I received an ARC from Booksprout and this is my honest opinion.
I give this book a 4/5
