This story was a simple read. It was easy to follow and even though I thought it was easy to figure out; it was fun and still mysterious. The tempo was perfect for the type and size of book it was. This was a great start in this series, and I cannot wait to continue on in this book.
Abbie Grimshaw, the main protagonist, is someone who is coming off a traumatic experience. I am not sure about her yet. She feels like she needs to be fleshed out a bit more. There was not that much of connection for me as a reader. Knowing this is just the first novel in the series, I am not too worried about it. For what we, as readers, got, there was enough for interest. I am interested in how her character develops in the future books.
The rest of the cast, for me, stole the story. They felt as if the author took more time to develop them than Abbie. Each one holds more questions about their pasts and powers, and I hope we learn throughout the series. Abbie and the cast connect well, and each help develop each other.
This story takes place in England. The Author intertwines the paranormal and the modern world extremely well. Everything felt natural and, as a reader, you can dive into the story without having a hard time learning the world. The way the powers worked and passed down between each character was not all difficult, as one reads in epic or older stories.
Overall, I enjoyed this story. The paranormal and mythology mix is one of my many favorite mixes in the fantasy world. The writing was well done, and the suspense kept my interest. I would recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal, mythology, Grimms, witches, mystery, and modern settings.
