It was called the Great Awakening, when magickal kind returned to our world. They live among us now, renting apartments, laboring in the workforce, and paying taxes. Ares is a vampire and doing very well for himself in the modern world. Between teaching at the local university and assisting a paranormal investigator, things couldn’t be better. But when a woman dies mysteriously in her own home, the question isn’t who killed her, but what.
It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it. For me, the pacing was slow, but I was fine. I would read the rest of this series.
The character in this story I enjoyed the most is Detective Docherty. Every time he came in, I always had the actor Jim Broadbent in my head. It was the way he played Horace Slughorn. I felt he was there to lighten the mood in the seriousness. I felt he was rounded enough for the story, but I wanted to know more about him. I did not feel satisfied with what little we had.
Alex was my second favorite. At first, I was not sure if I would like her, but once I understood her more, I liked her. I thought it was interesting on how she was introduced. You did not know she was a wiccan (or witch, I could not make out which one) until later in the book which I enjoyed. I do not know if the clues were sprinkled in, but I did not catch it until Alex said something about a meeting or class to her roommate. I felt like Alex could have been more rounded.
Ares was my least favorite character. I felt like he was the most rounded. There was something about him I did not enjoy. It may be his personality itself. It was nice on how he took care of Detective Docherty, by working on the website, taking care of the office fish, clientele, and overall mentality. Ares background was interesting and his view on what is going on in Canada.
The concept of this story is interesting. I enjoyed learning on how magical creatures and humans evolved in living in harmony. The rules on how to interact with certain creatures was a neat concept. Each creature is unique, like people. They must inspect the property before building for magical creatures is neat.
I enjoyed this book. It differed from what I have read. I recommend this book to anyone who loves magical creatures.
I give this book a 4/5
